Coggeshall is a small market town with a big personality, tucked between Braintree and Colchester in the north Essex countryside. It's got that proper chocolate-box feel – all timber-framed buildings, narrow lanes and old pubs where the beams slope slightly and the floorboards creak. Life here ticks along at a gentler pace, but there's still plenty going on, and whether you're into history, walking, antiques or just fancy a good pub lunch, it's the kind of place that quietly delivers.

The history of Coggeshall runs deep – we're talking Roman coins, medieval weavers, and a whole lot of monastic influence. The town grew around a Cistercian abbey founded in the 12th century, and even though the abbey's long gone, the remnants still shape the layout and atmosphere. In later years, it became a centre for the wool trade, and by the 17th century it was known for lace-making and tambour work. A lot of the historic buildings you see today – over 200 listed ones, in fact – date from the boom years of cloth and craft. Walk down West Street or Church Street and you can practically feel the centuries under your feet.

There's plenty to see and do, both in town and just beyond. Right in the heart of Coggeshall you'll find Paycocke's House, a stunning National Trust property built by a wealthy cloth merchant, full of carved beams and stories. A short stroll away is Grange Barn, another National Trust site, massive and medieval with exhibitions and events throughout the year. The town centre's packed with little shops, galleries, cafés and antique spots, and it still holds a proper market. Just outside town, Marks Hall Estate offers lovely walks, a walled garden and woodland trails. English Heritage's Layer Marney Tower is within easy reach too – the tallest Tudor gatehouse in the country and full of character.

There's no shortage of things to do across Essex either. Head to Colchester for the castle, Roman ruins and a busy town centre, or wander down to Maldon for a riverside stroll, some salty air and a bag of chips on the prom. Dedham Vale's all green hills and slow rivers – classic Constable country – and Southend is still the go-to for pier walks and old-school amusements. Chelmsford brings modern shopping and nightlife, while Saffron Walden leans more towards tea rooms and timber-framed charm. There's countryside, coast and culture in every direction.

Coggeshall doesn't have its own train station, but Kelvedon is just a few miles away and offers regular direct services into London Liverpool Street, so commuting's not out of the question. By car, you're close to the A120, which links nicely to the A12 and wider road network. If you're flying in or out, Stansted is the closest airport, around 40 minutes by road, with London Southend also doable depending on your route. There are bus links to Braintree, Colchester and Chelmsford, and once you're in town, it's a very walkable place – no need for a car to nip to the shops or grab a pint.

Essex is a county with far more depth than it often gets credit for. It's a place of contrasts – ancient lanes and modern roads, vast estuaries and tucked-away villages. You'll find castles, airfields, vineyards and country parks, all within a short drive. There's real diversity in the people, places and landscapes, and no two corners of the county feel quite the same. Whether you're here for the history, the outdoors or just looking for somewhere a little different to call home, Essex has a knack for surprising you when you least expect it.
