Upminster is a well-heeled suburban town on the far eastern edge of Greater London, right where Essex starts to take over. It's got that leafy, residential feel with all the perks of London transport—tube, trains, buses—and yet it still feels like its own self-contained place. The town centre's lively without being hectic, the schools are popular, and there's a surprising amount of green space on the doorstep. It's the sort of spot that draws commuters, families and long-term locals alike—some staying for generations, others finding their way here after a stint in the city.
The history of Upminster goes back to Saxon times, with its name thought to mean “the upper church,” likely referencing its position on higher ground above the Ingrebourne Valley. It stayed a quiet agricultural settlement for centuries, gradually expanding with the arrival of the railway in the late 19th century. By the time the District line reached here in the early 1900s, Upminster had started to transform into the commuter-friendly suburb it is today. Now part of the London Borough of Havering but historically in Essex, it has a population of around 25,000. There's still a village feel at its core, with a proper High Street, strong community links, and landmarks like the historic windmill adding a splash of heritage charm.
There's plenty to see and do around town. The Upminster Windmill is a real gem—recently restored and one of the best surviving smock mills in the country. Hall Lane Miniature Railway is a hidden delight for families, and Upminster Park offers open space right near the centre. If you're after a bit of culture, the Thames Chase Forest Centre is a lovely mix of walking trails, woods and community events. Just a short hop away, you've got English Heritage's Rainham Hall—a fine Georgian house with pretty gardens—and the National Trust's Eastbury Manor House over in Barking. If you're into walking, the nearby Ingrebourne Valley is perfect for a peaceful stroll through ancient meadows and woodland.
Across wider Essex, the list of places worth visiting keeps growing. Colchester's a solid choice for anyone into Roman history, with its castle and archaeology trails, while Dedham Vale offers scenic countryside walks and a bit of Constable Country charm. Southend brings all the fun of the seaside, with arcades, the world's longest pleasure pier, and fresh fish and chips by the sea. Saffron Walden's great for a more traditional day out, with its market square, timbered houses and winding old lanes. Maldon and its saltmarshes make a nice change of pace too, especially with a pint by the waterfront.
Getting in and out of Upminster is easy as anything. It's the end of the District line on the London Underground, and the c2c rail service gets you to Fenchurch Street in under 25 minutes. Local buses cover nearby areas like Cranham, Hornchurch and Romford, and the road network is solid too—with the A127 and M25 both close at hand. London City Airport is the closest for flights, around half an hour by car, while Stansted is also within reach for longer journeys. You can head east into Essex or west into the city with minimal fuss, which is exactly what makes the town so convenient.
Essex is a county of variety and contrasts. You've got market towns, seaside resorts, ancient churches, modern shopping centres, marshes, meadows and estuary views—all wrapped into one county that often flies under the radar. It's got character, history, and that mix of old and new that keeps it interesting. Whether you're after a lively town, a quiet country pub, or somewhere to stretch your legs with a view, there's always something just around the corner.
