Writtle is a picture-postcard village on the western edge of Chelmsford, full of charm and old-world appeal. It's the sort of place where people still say hello on the high street, and the village green is the beating heart of the community. Surrounded by open fields and tucked just far enough from the bustle of the city, Writtle offers a slower pace of life without feeling out in the sticks. With its duck pond, cosy pubs and a handful of well-kept historic buildings, it's no surprise it's often ranked among the prettiest villages in Essex.
The village has a long and fascinating past, with roots stretching back to Saxon times. It was once a royal manor, and Writtle's history includes connections to King John and the early Plantagenets. One of its more curious claims to fame is that it may have been the site of the first ever agricultural college in the country, which later became part of Writtle University College. The parish church of All Saints is over 800 years old and still stands proudly overlooking the green. Today, the population is around 5,500, and while the village has grown over time, it's managed to keep its rural character intact.
There's plenty to enjoy around the village itself. The green is a hub for community events and lazy Sunday strolls, and you'll find a few independent cafés and pubs dotted around the centre. All Saints Church is worth a visit, and the gardens of Writtle College offer a peaceful wander. A short drive brings you to Hylands House and Estate, a grand historic mansion with rolling parkland that's perfect for picnics, walks or even a spot of live music when the events roll in. For those into their history, English Heritage's Cressing Temple Barns are close by—one of the oldest timber-framed barns in Europe—and the National Trust's Hatfield Forest isn't too far either for a proper woodland walk.
Wider Essex offers up plenty to see and do. From the Roman walls and castle in Colchester to the sprawling wetlands of the Dengie Peninsula, the county really does cater for all tastes. Dedham Vale is ideal for lovers of landscape and art, with its Constable connections and winding river paths. If it's the coast you're after, you've got the likes of Mersea Island for seafood and sunset views, or Southend if you're after something a bit more full-on with arcades, rides and the pier. There's also Audley End House, a grand Jacobean mansion near Saffron Walden, which makes for a cracking day out.
Writtle's well placed when it comes to getting about. Chelmsford is just down the road, with regular trains into London Liverpool Street taking about 35 minutes. By road, the A414 and A12 connect you easily to the M25 or further out into East Anglia. Buses run through the village into Chelmsford and neighbouring spots. If you're heading further afield, Stansted Airport is the closest and takes around 30–40 minutes by car, making it handy for both weekend getaways and business trips. It's one of those places that feels tucked away but never cut off.
Essex itself is a county of contrast and character. You'll find everything from remote salt marshes and sleepy hamlets to vibrant towns, commuter hubs and coastline resorts. There's plenty of history, a decent food scene, and more hidden gems than people tend to give it credit for. Whether you're into ancient churches, seaside piers, nature reserves or quirky market towns, Essex always delivers something unexpected. And the best part is, it's all surprisingly close together—ideal for short trips or exploring without needing to go far.
