Langdon Hills is a lovely spot on the western edge of Basildon in Essex, perched just high enough to offer some cracking views across the Thames Estuary on a clear day. It's got a leafy, laid-back feel and a strong sense of community, the kind of place where you're not far from nature but still close enough to town life when you need it. With a mix of residential pockets, open green spaces, and well-kept parks, it appeals to both families and those after a slower pace.

The village has its roots deep in rural Essex, with early settlements cropping up on the high ground for the defensive advantage and the farmland. For years it remained mostly agricultural, made up of scattered farms and cottages. The post-war expansion of Basildon New Town brought new housing developments, and Langdon Hills gradually became more built up, though much of its original countryside charm has survived. Local historical landmarks like Great Berry and the remnants of older paths and lanes still whisper stories of its past.

When it comes to things to do, Langdon Hills Country Park is the jewel in the crown. With miles of trails, wooded walks, and open grassland, it's ideal for everything from dog walks to scenic picnics. Nearby, you've got the nature-rich areas of Westley Heights and Dry Street Meadow. Just a short drive away you'll find English Heritage's Hadleigh Castle, standing proudly over the estuary, and the National Trust's stunning gardens at RHS Hyde Hall. Wat Tyler Country Park is another local gem, with plenty of wildlife and family activities.

Further out into Essex, the variety of days out is hard to beat. Colchester offers the perfect mix of ancient history and modern shopping, while Southend's got the seaside, arcades, and that famous pier. Saffron Walden, with its medieval layout and market charm, is well worth a wander. Not to mention places like Audley End House, Layer Marney Tower, and Paycocke's House in Coggeshall – all steeped in history and well-kept by English Heritage or the National Trust.

Langdon Hills is in a great spot for getting about. The A13 and A127 are close by, giving quick access to the M25 or heading out to Southend and the coast. Laindon Station is the nearest for trains, with direct links into London Fenchurch Street via the c2c line, making it handy for commuters. If you're flying, Southend Airport is the closest and pretty convenient, but London City and Stansted aren't much further depending on which direction you're coming from.

Essex itself is full of surprises. While people might think first of the seaside or commuter belt, there's loads more to it – ancient woodland, quiet villages, riverside walks, historic market towns, and the kind of countryside that changes every few miles. It's a county of real variety, and each town and village has its own little quirks and charms, from well-preserved history to lively high streets and cosy pubs tucked away off the beaten path.
