Galleywood is a peaceful village sitting just to the south of Chelmsford, perched on a slight rise with lovely views and a strong sense of community. It's the sort of place where life feels just that little bit slower – leafy lanes, open green spaces, and the sort of friendly local spots where you always seem to bump into someone you know. Surrounded by countryside but with the city just a short hop away, it strikes a really nice balance between rural charm and convenience.
The village has a long and layered history. Galleywood Common is one of its most distinctive features and dates back to medieval times – once part of a huge swathe of common land used for grazing. It's been everything from farmland to a racecourse and even a military training ground during the Napoleonic Wars and World War II. The village itself grew gradually from scattered farms and cottages to a more settled community through the 19th and 20th centuries. St Michael and All Angels Church, standing quietly on the edge of the Common, remains one of the village's most recognisable landmarks and a reminder of its Victorian roots.
There's plenty to enjoy in and around Galleywood. The Common is still very much at the heart of village life – 175 acres of woodland, heath and open grass, perfect for dog walks, family outings or just soaking in the scenery. There are sports fields, play areas, and nature trails that make the most of the surroundings. Just a short drive away you'll find Hylands Estate – a grand historic house with stunning parkland that's open to the public year-round. RHS Garden Hyde Hall is not far either, offering beautifully landscaped gardens and countryside views. National Trust gems like Danbury Common and Blake's Wood are close by, while English Heritage's St John's Abbey Gate in Colchester and Witham Lodge provide a broader look at the county's past.
Across Essex, you're never short of things to do. Southend offers traditional seaside fun with its long pier, fairground and beaches, while Colchester brings Roman walls, a well-kept castle and a good mix of galleries and shops. Dedham Vale's rolling countryside is perfect for long walks and lazy lunches, and Maldon's estuary views, barges and salt flats bring a totally different kind of coastal charm. Saffron Walden's cobbled streets and market stalls, the vineyards around Coggeshall, and the nature reserves dotted across the Dengie Peninsula all add to the mix. Essex has a way of offering something for every kind of day.
Getting to Galleywood is nice and easy. Chelmsford train station is only a short drive or bus ride away and offers fast, direct trains into London Liverpool Street in under 40 minutes. The A12 runs close by, making road links into London, Colchester and beyond fairly straightforward. London Stansted is the nearest major airport, around 30 minutes by car, and Southend Airport isn't much further if you're after short-haul flights. Local buses connect the village with Chelmsford, Billericay, and surrounding areas, and once you're in Galleywood, it's a great place to explore on foot.
Essex as a county is far more varied than it tends to let on. There's a strong mix of old and new, urban and rural, coast and countryside – all stitched together by a deep sense of place. From Roman relics and timber-framed villages to modern shopping hubs and buzzing food scenes, there's always more to see than meets the eye. It's a county where you can walk through ancient woodland in the morning, stroll along a beach in the afternoon, and finish the day in a country pub or lively town centre. Essex knows how to keep things interesting.
