Walton-on-the-Naze is a classic Essex seaside town with a charming, slightly old-fashioned feel that's part of its appeal. Perched on the coast near the top of the Tendring Peninsula, it's got a long stretch of sandy beach, colourful beach huts, and a peaceful, friendly vibe that makes it popular with families and anyone looking to slow things down a bit. There's a proper pier, a decent mix of cafés and shops, and a sense that life moves at a gentler pace here, with sea breezes and salty air doing most of the heavy lifting.

The town has roots going back to Saxon times, with its name coming from “Wealas tūn,” meaning ‘settlement of the Britons.' It's grown over the years from a fishing and farming village into a traditional seaside resort, particularly booming in the Victorian era when the railway brought day-trippers and holidaymakers from London. Walton Pier was built in 1830 and still stands as one of the longest in the country. The Naze itself, with its red cliffs and fossil-filled shoreline, is rich in geological and natural history. Today, the town has a population of just over 12,000, and while it's quieter than nearby Frinton or Clacton, it's all the better for it.

There's plenty to enjoy in and around Walton. The pier is great for a walk or a spot of fun at the amusements, and the beaches are ideal for families—clean, sandy and gently sloping into the sea. The Naze Tower is one of the standout attractions—an 86-foot Georgian landmark offering panoramic views and home to a small gallery and tearoom. Nature lovers can explore the Walton Backwaters and Naze Nature Reserve, a haven for migrating birds and rare plants. English Heritage's Landguard Fort across the water at Felixstowe makes a nice day trip, and National Trust members will enjoy Flatford, in nearby Constable Country, for its iconic scenes and riverside walks.

Further afield, Essex offers all kinds of day-out options. Colchester is packed with history—castles, museums, Roman ruins and a lively town centre. Dedham Vale and the Stour Valley serve up countryside trails and peaceful pub lunches. If you're after seaside variety, you've got Clacton's amusements and pier, Frinton's genteel promenade, or Southend's high-energy beachfront. Maldon's a treat for maritime fans, with Thames barges and saltmarshes lining the river. And for something completely different, head inland to Saffron Walden or Thaxted for a proper taste of Essex market town life.

Getting to Walton-on-the-Naze is relatively straightforward. It's the end of the line on a branch of the Greater Anglia rail network, with direct trains from Colchester and connections to London Liverpool Street in around an hour and a half. By road, the A120 and A133 link the town to Colchester, the A12 and wider Essex. Buses run between Walton, Frinton, Clacton and nearby villages, and if you're flying in, London Stansted is your nearest airport, about an hour's drive away. There's also easy access to the Harwich ferry terminal for anyone coming in from the continent.

Essex is one of those counties that constantly surprises you. It's got a long coastline full of character—mudflats, beaches, estuaries and creeks—as well as vast farmland, ancient woodland and lively towns. Some bits are all high street bustle and fast trains to London, while others are sleepy and rooted in centuries of history. There's Roman influence in the walls of Colchester, Saxon churches in hidden corners, and Georgian townhouses looking out over windswept seas. It's a county of contrast, and Walton-on-the-Naze fits right into that mix—quiet but not forgotten, traditional but still ticking along nicely.
