Epping is a well-loved market town on the western edge of Essex, sitting right next to the ancient woodlands of Epping Forest. It's got that lovely blend of old and new – a high street full of independent shops and cafés, period buildings, and a steady hum of life that's just right for a place that feels both tucked away and well connected. Whether you're coming for a walk in the woods, a browse round the boutiques or just a pint in a cosy pub, Epping's the sort of town that quietly draws people in and keeps them coming back.
The history of Epping runs deep. Originally known as Epping Heath, the town grew around the forest edge as a place for travellers and traders heading to and from London. It became a key staging post during the coaching era, with plenty of inns and taverns to welcome those making the long journey. Epping's market has been running since the 13th century and still takes place every Monday. Many of the historic buildings lining the high street today date back to the Georgian and Victorian periods, giving the town a timeless look. Its position by the forest helped shape its identity, and that connection to nature and heritage still plays a big part in everyday life here.
There's loads to see and do in and around Epping. The forest is, of course, the main draw – over 6,000 acres of ancient woodland with walking and cycling trails, deer sightings and all sorts of hidden corners to explore. The town itself has a mix of places to eat, drink and shop, with a strong community feel and regular events through the year. Just outside town, Copped Hall is a historic mansion being lovingly restored – worth a visit if you can catch one of their open days. Nearby, the National Trust's Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge gives a glimpse into Tudor times, while English Heritage's Waltham Abbey and gardens are just a short drive away. You've also got the Epping Ongar Railway for a proper step back in time, offering steam and diesel rides through the countryside.
Wider Essex is full of spots worth exploring. Head towards Maldon for riverside walks and historic sailing barges, or south to Southend for a day at the seaside with all the usual trimmings. Saffron Walden is perfect if you like winding streets and period buildings, and Colchester is packed with history, from Roman walls to its well-kept castle. Dedham Vale is pure countryside magic – fields, rivers, and walking trails that look like they've stepped out of a painting. Whether it's history, coast or countryside you're after, Essex serves up plenty of choice without needing to travel too far.
Getting to and from Epping is easy. It's the last stop on the Central Line, so you can hop on the tube and be in central London in under an hour. For those driving, it's right by the M11 and the M25, making it a handy base for heading anywhere across the southeast. The closest mainline train stations are Harlow Town and Chingford, and buses run regularly to towns like Loughton and Ongar. If you're flying, London Stansted is the nearest airport, roughly a 30-minute drive, while London City and Luton are also within reasonable reach depending on traffic. Whether you're heading into town or out to the countryside, Epping's a great launch point.
Essex is often talked about in broad strokes, but the real charm is in the detail. It's a county full of contrasts – from market towns and medieval churches to seaside arcades and rolling farmland. There's a deep-rooted history in places like Colchester, a creative buzz in towns like Southend, and plenty of green space in between. The villages are full of character, the coastlines are ever-changing, and the food scene ranges from pub classics to vineyard tastings. Essex has always been a bit underestimated, which is probably part of its appeal. Once you've scratched the surface, it's the kind of place you want to stick around.
