Tilbury is a gritty, hard-working port town on the north bank of the River Thames in south Essex, directly across from Gravesend in Kent. It's best known for its docks, its ferries and its long-standing link with shipping and trade. There's a strong sense of community here, shaped by generations of dockworkers and river life. The town centre's compact but practical, and the riverside, with its big skies and sweeping views across the water, gives it a wide-open, windswept feel that's quite different from inland Essex towns.
The town has a deep maritime and military history going back centuries. Tilbury Fort is the town's crown jewel—originally built in the 16th century and famously used by Queen Elizabeth I to rally the troops as the Spanish Armada loomed. The Victorian era brought huge changes with the arrival of the railway and the construction of the port, which became a major gateway to and from London. The docks once welcomed ocean liners and immigrants from across the world, making Tilbury a place of arrival and departure. The town's population today sits at around 14,000, and while the port's role has changed over the years, it still dominates the local landscape and economy.
Tilbury's main attractions are closely tied to its history and location. Tilbury Fort, managed by English Heritage, is a standout—with its star-shaped layout, riverside views and echo of Elizabethan speeches. The Tilbury-Gravesend ferry still runs daily, offering a unique way to cross the Thames and explore both sides of the estuary. There are local pubs, play areas and the Civic Square shops, along with green spots like Anchor Fields for dog walking or kicking a ball about. Nearby, Coalhouse Fort Park is another historical gem, great for families and riverfront walks. You're also just a short drive from the Royal Opera House Production Park in Purfleet or the sprawling retail experience at Lakeside in Thurrock. For National Trust outings, Rainham Hall is close by, while English Heritage's Hadleigh Castle gives stunning estuary views.
Wider Essex has plenty to offer, whether you fancy the sea breeze or a bit of history. Southend's just up the coast with its pier, amusements and classic seaside feel. Maldon's maritime heritage and salt marshes are perfect for a slower day out, and Colchester is packed with Roman ruins and a castle museum that's well worth a visit. If you want rolling countryside, Dedham Vale and the Stour Valley are brilliant walking spots, while Wivenhoe and Saffron Walden offer artsy shops and charming old streets.
Getting to and from Tilbury is fairly straightforward. The town is served by Tilbury Town station, with regular c2c trains running into London Fenchurch Street in under an hour. The A1089 links directly to the A13, giving access to the M25 and Dartford Crossing within minutes. The Tilbury Ferry provides a handy pedestrian link across the Thames to Gravesend, and buses run frequently to Grays and surrounding areas. London City Airport is the nearest for air travel, about 40 minutes away by car, with Stansted not much further for more options.
Essex is often misunderstood, but those who know it appreciate the variety. It's a county of ports and pastures, old villages and new developments, salty estuaries and leafy market towns. Some places are brash and bold, others are tucked away and tranquil. There's deep history, with layers of Roman, Saxon and Norman influence, as well as a vibrant modern culture shaped by London commuters, long-standing locals, and diverse communities. It's got charm and character in equal measure, once you scratch beneath the surface.
