Romford is one of those places that manages to be both unmistakably Essex and firmly on London's radar. Sitting on the edge of the capital in the borough of Havering, it's got a proper town centre, a bit of swagger, and a pace of life that swings between busy weekday commuters and laid-back weekend shoppers. It's always had a bit of a market-town heart, and even though it's expanded and modernised, that sense of being its own place, not just a suburb, still holds strong.

Romford's roots go deep, with records dating back to the 12th century when it was a small market town on the main road between London and Colchester. The market itself was granted a royal charter in 1247 and is still going strong today, over 750 years later. It was historically part of Essex before being absorbed into Greater London in the 1960s, but plenty of locals will tell you it's Essex through and through. These days, Romford has a population pushing 150,000, with a strong blend of long-time locals, commuters and families drawn in by the fast trains and roomy houses.

There's no shortage of things to do around town. Romford Market is still a proper draw, full of traders selling everything from flowers to street food. The Brewery and Liberty shopping centres bring together big-name stores, cinema screens and cafés. Romford Greyhound Stadium still draws a crowd on race nights, and the ice rink's a popular spot too. Just outside the town, you'll find Bedfords Park and Raphael Park—green retreats with lakes, trails and room to breathe. For heritage fans, Rainham Hall, a beautiful National Trust Georgian house, isn't far, and English Heritage's Upminster Windmill is being lovingly restored nearby. If you're up for a wander, Havering Country Park gives you woods, open space and the odd Highland cow.

Wider Essex offers all sorts once you leave Romford's buzz behind. You've got Dedham Vale up north, classic Constable countryside with its timeless beauty. Maldon's got maritime charm and a bit of seaside flavour, while Colchester brings Roman ruins and a zoo that's one of the best in the country. If you're into history, there's Audley End House, Layer Marney Tower and the old battleground at Maldon. Or if coastlines are more your thing, there's Southend with its pier and arcades, or quieter spots like Walton and Frinton for a more relaxed feel.

Getting around from Romford is a breeze. The town's right on the Elizabeth Line, which means you can be in central London in under half an hour. The A12 cuts through nearby and connects with the M25, so road travel's pretty direct too. Romford Station's the main hub, but Gidea Park and Emerson Park stations give alternatives if you're a bit further out. For flying, London City Airport is the nearest at around 30 minutes by car, with Stansted and Southend both comfortably reachable for longer hauls. Buses and local transport cover the area well, linking up neighbouring towns and villages without too much waiting around.

Essex is a county full of contrast. Some parts are fiercely urban, others feel like you've stepped into another century. It's got busy commuter towns and quiet marshland, ancient churches and massive retail parks, fishing villages and festival fields. The reputation often oversimplifies it, but dig a little deeper and there's more to Essex than most people realise. It's this blend of edge and tradition that gives the place its spark—people are proud of where they're from, and rightly so.
