West Mersea is a laid-back coastal town tucked away on Mersea Island, just south of Colchester. Known for its oysters, beach huts, and sailing community, it's the kind of place that attracts both lifelong locals and visitors looking to escape the rush. The town has a chilled, easygoing feel with views out over the Blackwater Estuary, especially at sunset when the water lights up gold. It's got a close-knit community, a tidy little high street, and a shoreline packed with character—mudflats, bobbing boats and salty sea air.

The town's history runs deep, dating back to Roman times when the area served as a small port and settlement. The name “Mersea” comes from Old English meaning ‘island of the Meresige people'. By the time of the Domesday Book, it was an established coastal parish, with fishing and farming shaping its growth. Oysters have been harvested here since Roman days, and that connection remains a big part of its identity. Today, West Mersea is home to around 7,000 people, many of whom have ties to the fishing, sailing or tourism trades. St Peter and St Paul's Church, perched just inland, marks the oldest part of the town and stands as a nod to its long, maritime past.

There's plenty to enjoy in West Mersea itself. The beaches are clean and dog-friendly, with rows of brightly painted huts that give the seafront a postcard-perfect look. The Mersea Island Museum is worth a visit for a glimpse into the island's history—from fossils and boat-building to local tales. Food-wise, you're spoilt for choice with seafood restaurants and pubs serving up fresh catches straight from the estuary. Just across the causeway, you'll find Cudmore Grove Country Park—ideal for walking, birdwatching and a bit of fossil-hunting along the cliffs. English Heritage's Layer Marney Tower isn't far either, a stunning Tudor gatehouse surrounded by gardens and countryside. And for National Trust fans, Paycocke's House in nearby Coggeshall offers a beautifully preserved slice of merchant life.

Wider Essex gives you all sorts of options for day trips. Colchester's just up the road, with its Roman walls, Norman castle and independent shopping scene. Maldon offers up quayside pubs, Thames barges and scenic walks along the salt marshes. Dedham Vale, the heart of Constable Country, is perfect for those after riverside strolls and timeless English countryside. If you're after the seaside but want a different scene, Southend's got arcades and action, while quieter spots like Frinton and Walton give a more old-school seaside feel.

Getting to West Mersea is fairly straightforward, though you've got to keep an eye on the tide if you're planning to cross the Strood, the only road in and out of the island, which does flood from time to time. The nearest railway stations are in Colchester and Kelvedon, with regular services to London. From there, buses or a short taxi ride will get you over to the island. By road, the A12 links up with Colchester, and the rest is pretty easy from there. London Stansted is the closest airport—about an hour's drive away—and is your best bet for flights in and out of the region.

Essex as a county is packed with contrast. You've got buzzing commuter towns and miles of farmland, ancient forests and big shopping centres, salt flats and market squares. There's Roman history in Colchester, medieval wool towns like Lavenham just over the border, and centuries-old pubs around almost every corner. The coastline's one of the longest in the country, full of tucked-away creeks and open estuaries. It's a county that manages to be both well-connected and full of hidden gems—some loud and lively, others peacefully under the radar.
