Ilford is a lively and ever-evolving town on the edge of East London, historically part of Essex and still proudly holding onto much of its Essex identity. It's one of those places where you're never short of something to do, whether it's browsing the high street, grabbing a bite to eat, or heading out to one of the nearby parks. With a buzzing multicultural atmosphere and excellent transport links, it's a popular spot for commuters, families, and anyone who likes to have the best of both the city and the suburbs.
The history of Ilford stretches back further than most people realise. It started life as a small rural village along the River Roding and was known for its coaching inns and brickmaking during the 17th and 18th centuries. Things really kicked off in the Victorian era with the arrival of the railway, which transformed Ilford into a thriving commuter town. In the early 20th century, it was well-known for the Ilford Photo Company—once a major name in photographic film and cameras. Even today, hints of Ilford's past are dotted around if you know where to look, from old pubs to charming period homes.
There's plenty to keep you busy in and around Ilford. Valentines Park is a local gem with boating lakes, gardens, and space for picnics and strolls. The historic Valentines Mansion, set within the park, is worth a look—it often hosts exhibitions, events and heritage tours. The Exchange Ilford is the main shopping centre and it covers all the essentials, while the surrounding streets are full of independent eateries offering everything from curries and kebabs to Caribbean and Chinese. A short journey takes you to Wanstead Park, and just beyond that, you've got English Heritage's Wanstead House ruins and the National Trust's Rainham Hall not too far off, both making for interesting local outings.
Wider Essex has a bit of everything going on. Head north and you'll reach Epping Forest, ideal for walking and cycling. A little further and you're into the market towns like Ongar and Brentwood, each with their own charm. For proper seaside fun, Southend-on-Sea is always an option, with its pier, arcades and plenty of fish and chips. History buffs could head to Colchester for the castle, or explore Audley End House near Saffron Walden, one of the finest stately homes in the country.
Ilford's transport links are one of its strongest suits. The Elizabeth line now runs straight through the town, giving you quick and easy access to central London, Heathrow and beyond. You've also got Overground and Greater Anglia services, plus loads of buses criss-crossing the borough. The A406 North Circular is right there, and the M11 and A12 are both a short drive away. London City Airport is the nearest by far, only about 25 minutes away by car or train, making travel abroad pretty painless.
Essex as a county is often misunderstood. It's far more than the stereotypes—it's a big place with proper variety. From the ancient market towns and coastal hideaways to the quiet villages and lively commuter belts, it's got something for everyone. Farming and fishing still shape the landscape in some parts, but you'll also find tech parks, boutique vineyards and heritage sites peppered throughout. Whether you're after a peaceful countryside escape or want to stay close to the action, Essex always delivers a bit more than expected.
