Great Wakering is a peaceful, tucked-away village in the far southeast corner of Essex, sitting just outside Southend-on-Sea and a stone's throw from the marshy creeks and wide skies of the North Sea coast. It's a proper village in feel, where locals stop to chat on the high street and you're never far from a field, a footpath or the sound of gulls drifting in from the estuary. Life here has a gentle rhythm – steady and quiet – but there's a strong community spirit and plenty of local character if you know where to look.
The village has deep historical roots, with links going right back to Saxon times. The name "Wakering" comes from the Waeccaringas, a Saxon tribe thought to have settled in the area. For centuries, it remained a quiet agricultural community, shaped by saltmarshes and farmland. The heart of the village is St Nicholas' Church, parts of which date back to the 12th century. During the Second World War, the surrounding land was used for military training, and remnants of the past can still be seen if you know where to look – old pillboxes hidden in the fields and footpaths that once served much more serious purposes.
Great Wakering may be off the beaten track, but it's got more to it than first meets the eye. There are a handful of friendly pubs, cafés, local shops and village services, plus plenty of countryside to explore. Walking out towards Wakering Stairs brings you to the edge of the Maplin Sands, an eerily beautiful stretch of marsh and mudflat that's perfect for birdwatching or a windswept wander. Nearby Shoebury East Beach is a favourite with families, and Gunners Park – a former military site turned nature reserve – is full of history and wildlife. A short drive away, English Heritage's Hadleigh Castle ruins offer sweeping estuary views, while National Trust's Rayleigh Mount is ideal for a short stroll with a bit of medieval flavour. You've also got Southchurch Hall and Priory Park in Southend if you fancy diving deeper into local heritage.
Wider Essex gives you even more to explore. Head west for the rolling countryside around Danbury, full of walking routes, woods and National Trust sites. Maldon brings its iconic salt pans, Thames barges and riverside charm. Colchester's packed with Roman history and a proper castle, and Dedham Vale, with its patchwork fields and winding rivers, feels a world away from the bustle. For seaside fun, Southend is close by with its classic pier, arcades and fish and chips on the prom, while quieter spots like Leigh-on-Sea and Burnham-on-Crouch offer a slower pace and great food.
Transport-wise, Great Wakering isn't on the trainline, but Shoeburyness station is just a few minutes away by car or bus, linking directly to London Fenchurch Street via the c2c line in about an hour. The village is easily reached via the A13 and local routes from Southend. London Southend Airport is close by – around 15 minutes by car – offering handy short-haul flights and domestic routes. Local buses connect Great Wakering to Southend, Shoebury, and surrounding villages, and once you're in the village itself, most places are within easy walking distance.
Essex is one of those counties that manages to pack in more variety than most. There's coast, countryside, market towns, and big commuter centres all within easy reach of each other. Ancient woodland sits just a short drive from marshy creeks, and you can go from Roman ruins to vineyard tastings in the space of an afternoon. It's a county with deep roots and a forward-looking outlook, full of local pride, hidden gems and that brilliant blend of practicality and personality that Essex does so well.
