Stanway is a large, semi-rural village just to the west of Colchester, blending old-world charm with the convenience of modern living. It's one of those places that's grown steadily but still manages to keep hold of its village feel, despite having all the retail parks and big-name shops you could ask for. It's got a comfortable, well-established vibe to it, with quiet roads, decent schools and good access to both countryside and town.
The village has deep historical roots—its name comes from the Saxon “stone way,” which probably refers to the Roman road that passed through the area. Stanway was once a sleepy rural parish, made up of farmland, woodland and a scattering of cottages, but things began to shift as Colchester expanded. Today, it sits on the edge of the town but still retains its own identity. With a population of around 10,000, it's become a popular spot for families and commuters who want a bit more space without straying too far from civilisation. You'll still find traces of its past, especially around Stanway Green and the old church of All Saints.
There's plenty going on in and around Stanway if you know where to look. Locally, you've got a strong mix of parks, leisure centres and shops, plus the nearby Tollgate Retail Park for everything from fashion to food. The village is also not far from Colchester Zoo, one of the UK's most respected wildlife attractions. For those after something a bit more serene, Marks Hall Estate isn't too far—a stunning mix of gardens, woodlands and trails. You're also within easy reach of English Heritage's Colchester Castle, with its Roman foundations and impressive museum, and for National Trust fans, Bourne Mill is just a short drive away, offering a peaceful riverside setting and a touch of Tudor history.
The wider Essex area is full of gems. Dedham Vale is a must if you love countryside rambles—this is classic Constable territory, with winding rivers, thatched cottages and proper pub lunches. Maldon offers coastal charm and old-world quayside appeal, while Southend brings a more energetic seaside flavour, all piers and arcades. Towns like Saffron Walden, Thaxted and Wivenhoe serve up a mix of historic streets, art scenes and quirky shopping. You don't have to go far in Essex to stumble across somewhere new to explore.
Stanway's in a really handy spot for getting about. It's just off the A12, so you've got easy access to London, Chelmsford and the rest of East Anglia. Colchester Station is the closest for rail travel, offering direct services to London Liverpool Street in under an hour. There are good bus links into Colchester and surrounding villages, and the roads tend to flow fairly well, even at peak times. For air travel, your closest bet is London Stansted, about 45 minutes away by car, with flights across the UK and Europe.
Essex is a county of contrasts, and that's part of what makes it so interesting. One minute you're in the heart of a buzzing town, the next you're winding through ancient lanes surrounded by fields and woodland. It's got coastlines and castles, market towns and meandering estuaries. Some parts are loud and lively, others are slow and quiet—and often the two sit right next door to each other. It's a place that wears its history proudly but isn't stuck in the past, and for those who dig a little deeper, there's always something to uncover.
